[[Visit | Visit House]] or [[go back to the map | locations]]The old rickety door swings open with a whine of its rusted hinges. Light streams in from the thin curtains that cover the small window above your bed. An old dusty [[picture frame | Look]] glints under the light. Even so, [[the room | Bedroom]] feels homey and safe. You wipe the dust off with your gloved fingers. Under the thick coat of dirt two familiar faces stare back at you. Your parents left this world [[long before their time | Parents]]. Sometimes you still miss them.Your parents died in the city doing the same work you do now. <<if $humanity > -41 >>It makes you wonder if you shouldn't just setlle down in Cattle's Run<<else>>You can't find it in yourself to care.<</if>>
[[Look away from the photo | Bedroom]]Your boots click against the wooden floor. [[Your bed | Sleep]] calls to you after so many sleepless days. [[The pantry | Pantry]] is never fully stocked, but you're sure you could find something there. Behind you [[the door | Leave House]] stands as a barrier between you and the stressors of the outside world.<<if $humanity > -1>>Sleep comes easy to you after so much time fighting for your life. You dream of a better home, a safer place. In your dream there is no more fighting- your gun is safely tucked away, only to be touched in case of emergency. People greet you as you walk past without a hint of trepidation. You awaken feeling rejuvenated.
<<elseif $humanity > -41 >>
Sleep doesn't come easily today. No matter what you do you can't seem to find comfort under your sheets. The harsh metal planes of your body seem to pinch the skin around them. When sleep finally claims you, your dreams are filled wih unease. Darkness surrounds you and all around you, standing tall, are large shadowy towers. Metal scrapes against metal and gears whir in the distance. No matter how far you walk you cant seem to escape their metalic gaze. You awaken feeling unsteady.
<<else>>
No matter how hard you try you can't seem to fall asleep. Your mind is awake, powered by metal and wires rather than blood and muscle. You stay there for a few more minutes before giving up.<</if>>
You [[stand up | Leave House]] from bed, ready to go about the rest of your day.You open the pantry door and are met with a few dented cans of food. It's not much, but you can [[have a snack | Snack]] if you would like. You crack open a can of black beans with a small pocket knife and sit down at the small one-seat table in the middle of your bedroom. <<if $humanity > -41>>You eat it slowly, savoring the meal like its your last since it very well could be.<<else>> It takes you a moment for you to realize you don't feel hungry... You don't feel anything anymore. This is pointless.<</if>>
[[Throw out the can | Trash]]You throw the can into the small bin thats functioned as your trash for years before heading for [[the door | Leave House]].You make sure to lock the door behind you as you face the sprawling desert outside. The wind whips against your face, beckoning you forward. In an odd way its emptiness is beautiful, but you have no time to appreciate its glory. You [[open your map | locations]] to figure out where to go next.
/* Ember City */A sprawling urban city with large skyscrapers and a constant blanket of light and smog.
The people here reak of wealth.
Underneath the city's image lies another name [[The Ashes | Ashes]]
[[Visit | Visit City]] or [[go back to the map | locations]]The neon lights and constant blanket of noise welcome you into the city. Skyscrapers tower above you like mountain tops you could never hope to climb.
People pass by without offering you a second glance as they go about their days. And there it is: [[the bounty board | Cassidy Start]], the pieces of paper touting tantalizing sums of money on it calling your name as you walk by.
There are numerous stores here, but you know the best ones... at least for your needs.
There's a small [[mom and pop shop | ec.augments1]] called The Iron Giant that sells food and offers cybernetic enhancements whenever they have them in stock.
The husband worked as an engineer for years, so his work isn't too bad, although he'd never really worked with augmentations before opening the store.
There's also [[a fancy shop | ec.augments2]] uptown where the more well-off folks go to get new augmentations. The work is good if you can afford to pay the price.
Towering above the rest of the city, like its own personal sun, the glowing lights of the Blue Flame Casino cast a dim light upon the other steal and glass buildings around it.
[[Leave the city | locations]]The giant sign above the casino with its colored lights that twinkle like stars seems to call you in.
The smell of smoke strengthens as you get closer, but if anything it nearly feels comforting- like a blanket pulled tight on a cold afternoon.
The security... robots?
People?
You're not sure what they are anymore, but they don't even look your way as you walk in.
In the lobby there are several tables set up with dealers ready to play. The dealers themselves are some of the most augmented people you've ever seen- their entire faces transformed into an amalgamation of wires and lights.
You can [[sit down at a table | Gamble]] or [[go further in | investigate casino]]
[[leave casino | Visit City]].You sit down at a spider's eyes table and nod your head to the dealer. Its a simple game, one you played often in your youth. Both you and the dealer roll a die and whoever rolls the highest wins. He seems mostly human although you can't quite tell if the visor that wraps around his head is removable or not. Even still his voice sounds human enough. "Unfortunately, that's what I've been hearing a lot of these days. I'm quite sorry about your parents." You know not far from the church your parents lie six feet under unmarked graves.
The pastor at least has the mind to give a small apologetic smile.
[["It's been hard." | Pastor End]]"Even as times become harder I hope you can find a safe place here. I'm sure you're not here to entertain me though, I hope whatever you're here for finds you well."

You shrug, reaching over to grab the cigar from the man again. He lets you take it from his fingers with no resistance. "Does it matter if I'm killing myself in the process?"
